As new linux user, who knows practically nothing about its dark side, I found this Ubuntu is easy to install (really just few general questions with yes and no buttons on screen) and very simple to use. I am still browsing its programs, and from what I read online, I see that many use command prompt. I’m familiar with command prompt in Windows (as I’m old enough to remember DOS) and none of few commands I remembered worked. Luckily the set comes with reference card of linux commands, so I tried few and I think it is more complex that it was in DOS. In graphical environment I was able copy and delete files, create new directories etc, so I don’t see why I would use command prompt too much. I understand that command prompt allows much more control, but not for my needs of internet browsing and typing…

BTW, internet is very fast with Ubuntu on the same computer. I had XP on it before, and with linux on it, it is much faster. I really enjoy working in Openoffice it comes with it and installs automatically). I tried it long ago with windows and wasn’t impressed, but this new office is really great software. It is easy to learn, there’s not much to learn really, the interface is very clear, and it is really rich application. I have fairly new computer, not the latest one, but from late 2008 and everything works fine. I also have small hp laser printer and it prints under ubuntu without problem. My online backup storage has web interface and it works well in linux too. I am very pleased with it.

It is very sweet release and installs without a glitch. It is cute, very nicely fitting my laptop. The design is amazing, the installation is very smooth. So far everything works well for me! I encourage everyone give it a try. I tried 5 versions of Ubuntu before, and for various reasons I ended up with Fedora on one of my laptops. While new Fedora is around a corner, this new Ubuntu is a keeper.

I bought this product because I was having a problem upgrading Ubuntu 9.10 to 10.04 using the free download from the internet. The process just would not complete successfully using the download manager. Guess what folks? The same problem exists on the disk I bought. It is useless to me and I am still using 9.10. But it comes in a pretty case with 5 other disks I have no use for.

The caveat here is that I am a lifelong windows user and not very swift with the vagaries of Linux.

If you want Ubuntu, download and install 9.10. It works fine. The version 10.04 is just not yet ready for showtime.

Several days have passed using Ubuntu and I am very pleased with this OS. I was able also to set up accounts for all the kids so each can have their own environment to work in. It is also an excellent fit for someone who wants to develop software.

These DVDs are excellent if you don’t have a high speed Internet connection but want to try out Ubuntu and Kubuntu, because they include a lot of extra software which wouldn’t fit on a standard CD.

In other words, the more you do, the more you’ll find that you can do with Linux, including some nice things that aren’t in Windows. If you feel awkward the first week, but are willing to learn a little, you’ll be pretty comfortable by the second week and right at home after that.

Ubuntu and Kubuntu set is a not only an excellent software, but a guide upgrades that will aide in staying current. Anyone who uses Linux will benefit from it. A definite for a beginner, and the reference card is a good reminder or reference on some subjects you may not have touched on over the years for those with experience. I bought it because I had been away from Linux for awhile and was rusty on all of the commands. This filled the bill perfectly!
