I originally purchased similar set with both kubuntu and ubuntu and I installed ubuntu, so the review goes here. As new linux user, who knows practically nothing about its dark side, I found this Ubuntu is easy to install (really just few general questions with yes and no buttons on screen) and very simple to use. I am still browsing its programs, and from what I read online, I see that many use command prompt. I’m familiar with command prompt in Windows (as I’m old enough to remember DOS) and none of few commands I remembered worked. Luckily the set comes with reference card of linux commands, so I tried few and I think it is more complex that it was in DOS. In graphical environment I was able copy and delete files, create new directories etc, so I don’t see why I would use command prompt too much. I understand that command prompt allows much more control, but not for my needs of internet browsing and typing…
BTW, internet is very fast with Ubuntu on the same computer. I had XP on it before, and with linux on it, it is much faster. I really enjoy working in Openoffice it comes with it and installs automatically). I tried it long ago with windows and wasn’t impressed, but this new office is really great software. It is easy to learn, there’s not much to learn really, the interface is very clear, and it is really rich application. I have fairly new computer, not the latest one, but from late 2008 and everything works fine. I also have small hp laser printer and it prints under ubuntu without problem. My online backup storage has web interface and it works well in linux too. I am very pleased with it.
The operating system discs were not capable of installing the system. There was not advice available from the seller. Obviously they had not tested the product. It was money totally wasted.
Ubuntu is ideal for the typical PC user, who needs to browse the Web, send email, store a music library and so on. There are also pretty much no viruses to deal with, because Linux uses a completely different architecture than Windows, and one that can be viewed and changed by anyone in the world. It runs really fast on my old Toshiba. I am not a guru, am actually a full-time student on a restricted budget so not having to buy a new computer is a boon. I feel this operating system is a very good start and worth taking a serious look.
Package includes 4 disk DVD set that includes Ubuntu 10.04 and training videos. It is a pretty complete package for anyone wanting to install Ubuntu Linux. The GUI is much better than previous versions and installation was easy.
It is very sweet release. It is cute, very nicely fitting my laptop. The design is amazing, the installation is very smooth. So far everything works well for me! I encourage everyone give it a try. I tried 5 versions of Ubuntu before, and for various reasons I ended up with Fedora on one of my laptops. While new Fedora is around a corner, this new Ubuntu is a keeper.
