I have been a loyal customer of TurboTax software for 10+ years. It has always performed extremely well and was very economical. However, that all changed with this years version of TurboTax. I purchased the Deluxe version (Which said it included Federal + State + efile). Unfortunately, when I tried to download my State version, the program showed that I was supposed to pay an ADDITIONAL $39 + change for right to get the State portion. Many, many people have had the same problem and fixes and solutions by Intuit are slow to non-existent. According to the various forums even when they were directed to a link to download the State, they were unable to edit it after they had finished. It is very sad to see a formally “great” software program suffer such a detrimental downfall. I have had no past problems with this program, in point of fact, I was always extremely please with my association with Intuit software (TurboTax, Quicken, etc). If a fix is not forthcoming, I will surely abandon Intuit forever. Buyer Beware, as the old saying goes.
software & and game installer wont install in advanced computers. i love amazon and
this is the first time they disappointed me. spent hours trying to install that stupid software “downloader” . i gave up and ask for a refund.
i wont download any software from them unless they fix that buggy software.

It had been many years since we did our taxes ourselves (used to use Turbotax 10 years ago), but we wanted to give turbotax a try after hearing how simple and straightforward it makes the process. Thought the question and answer interview process helped make it much simpler, though it was still very time consuming entering all the data…but love that next year we’ll be able to just import all that work we already did into our new return.
Two main issues that i think Turbotax should improve -
1) for very simple/small amount of extra miscellaneous income that we got on a 1099-misc form causing us to fill out a schedule C, it was a royal pain to access the proper “interview” questions to complete both the income and the potential appropriate expense write off’s that completing a schedule C should give you. Deluxe TurboTax keeps showing you a screen prompt trying to get you to upgrade for an additional $40 to the small business Turbotax which seems like overkill & unnecessary expense for this purpose. We knew from reading that schedule C is supported in Turbotax but had to repeated try different prompt options to finally figure it out, it’s like they’ve hidden the entry a bit to try to push people to buy the more expensive option.
2) Turbotax should make it easy to compare whether married filing jointly or married filing separately would be most advantageous. For a number of dual income couples, filing separately can be better, but it was impossible to figure out how to do this. I couldn’t get through on their help line till this morning after i gave up and filed jointly to get it done. The Turbotax rep tells me i’d need to either delete all the info and reenter it, or set up 3 different returns – one return with us filing jointly, one with my return filing separately and one with my husband filing separately and compare manually which is best. This seems to be a common dilemma for married couples, and they should make it a simple automated process so that i can electronically back in and out of it the different ways. Apparently you have to re-enter all your forms (W-2s, interest income, etc!!)in separate returns, one joint, and one for you and your spouse as separate returns to calculate which way is best. I was shocked when their rep told me that it had to be done separately/manually.
This has caused me more trouble than I care to relate. It most definitely did NOT get me a bunch of money that I didn’t know I had coming to me, like the commercials would have you think. Intuit makes a flawed product and then creates an impossible to contact customer service center. Brilliant! Stay away at all costs.
this is the best product out there. i understand people had issues with downloads and time outs but that could be their particular system, like someone mentioned it does not work well with vista. i am running a 5 year old laptop with XP and downloaded and installed it all in about 90 minutes and was up and running. $41.99 for the program, free state $40 value, and yes you do get it….. and you pay $19.99 for the state efile, or simply mail state portion. $62 and you’re done. or even 42 if had time to print and mail. cheap cheap! great product. at sams was 50 plus state efile i believe, they lowered it on last day (today) to 45 but still, this download from amazon wins.
